On Thursday, August 4th at 3:21 PM Anita "Mema" Griffis, surrounded by her family, slipped from this earth into heaven and the arms of her Lord. Anita was born September 29, 1943 in Rocky Sunk, Suwannee Co. Florida. An almost lifelong resident of Starke Florida, Anita was married to Doyce Albert Griffis for 60 years. Together they had four children; Doyce Dean Griffis, Tyffany Suezette Griffis Wishart, Polly Griffis Smith (Richie), and Amy Beth Griffis. In addition Anita had five grandchildren; Houston McClain, BriAnn Wishart Thomas (Brandon), Daniel Wishart, Briar Smith, and Jozee Smith; and five great grandchildren. Anita was preceded in death by her, parents Leon Bruce "Red" Alvarez and Thelma Priest Alvarez, brother Travis Alvarez, and mother Wanda Faye Whitfield. She is survived by her sister Patricia Alvarez Neely. Anita was a registered nurse most of her adult life. Employed at both Starke and Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville, her passion for nursing was evident in the love and care of her patients and co-workers which were never just patients or co-workers they were her family as well. This love for others carried through to others where most knew her best as Mema. Mema had countless "adopted" children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her love for others was only surpassed by her love for her Lord, savior, and closest friend, Jesus Christ. Services for Mrs Anita will be Saturday, August 13th at 11:00, with the viewing being held from 10 to 11, at Grace Baptist Church 13393 SE County Road 100A, Starke FL.
