Obituary

Ben Lee Moxley, Jr., 88, of Brooker passed away peacefully Thursday, May 14, 2015 at E.T.York Haven Hospice in Gainesville following a long illness. He was born January 15, 1927 inLouisville, Georgia to Ben Lee Moxley, Sr. and Reba Campbell Moxley. He graduated fromMidville High School and attended Georgia Tech for one year before joining the Navy in 1944.He was a gunner in the Navy for two years. After leaving the Navy he attended andgraduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering.He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He worked for the Savannah River Plant in NewEllington, South Carolina for 4 years. In 1955 he went to work with the DuPont Mining Plant inStarke, Florida, where he worked for 48 1/2 years as a mining engineer; retiring in 1999.Ben was involved in many organizations throughout his life. He was a founding member anddeveloper of the Starke Golf and Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and served formany years as President and Board Member. He also served as President of Bradford HighSchool PTA and President of the Bradford High School Quarterback Club, both during the sameschool year. Ben enjoyed cooking and was famous for his steak dinners which he served tomany organizations and groups at the Starke Golf and Country Club for many years. Heenjoyed researching family history and was a member of the Augusta Genealogical Society.Ben also enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family. He was a member ofthe American Legion in Starke. He was a member of Brooker Baptist Church and a formermember of the First United Methodist Church of Starke. In addition to his parents he waspreceded in death by his sister, Betty Burch.He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Gwen (Netherland) Moxley of Brooker;son, Ben L. Moxley, III of Daytona Beach Shores; daughter, Lynn (Gene) Melvin of Brooker;grandsons, Brian (Cassie) Melvin of Brooker; Brad Melvin of Brooker; Granddaughter,Brooke Moxley of Deland.Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Starke, 200 N. Walnut St.at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Visitation will be from 3:00-4:00 p.m. prior to theservice. Interment will be at the Midville City Cemetery in Midville, Georgia on Thursday,May 21, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are by Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home of Starke.In lieu of flowers contributions made be made to Brooker Baptist Church Building Fund,P.O.
