Betty "Becky" Jane Fowler, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, at Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida. She was 98 years old.
Born on March 22, 1928, in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty was the daughter of Joe Griffin Irby and Mary Agnes Walton Irby. In 1933, her parents became the resident caretakers of the Jacksonville Humane Society, where they served for approximately 20 years. It was there that Betty developed a lifelong love of animals and first learned to fish from the dock on Pottsburg Creek. She remained deeply rooted in the Jacksonville community she loved throughout her life.
Betty graduated from Landon High School and attended Florida Southern College, where she studied Sociology and Religion. Throughout her career, she served as office manager for the Ford Dealers' Advertising Fund, held several positions with AT&T in Atlanta during a period of corporate restructuring, and later worked as a bookkeeper for Universal Manufacturing. She was known for her dedication, strong work ethic, and warm, friendly spirit.
Her greatest joy was her family. Betty was a wonderful cook who treasured time spent with those she loved. Whether gathered around the dinner table, traveling together, or enjoying a quiet day of fishing, she found happiness in life's simple pleasures.
A devoted woman of faith, Betty faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Her compassionate heart, gentle presence, and willingness to serve others reflected the faith that guided her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Griffin Irby and Mary Agnes Hegner; her brother, Joe Griffin Irby, Jr.; and her sister, Ann Lee Whitmire.
Betty is survived by her devoted husband, Loyd Benton Fowler; her daughters, Laura Irene Murray and Betty Rogers (Steve); her stepson, Robert Lee Murray Jr. and his wife Betsy, their daughter Caroline; her grandchildren, San Dee Governale, Hannah Wells (Donnie), Amber Fannin (Derek), Meaghan Wilkes, and Caroline Murray; her great-grandchildren, Olivia Brueggemeyer (Luke), Emma Cooper, Jacob Cooper, Joshua Fannin (Lacey), Lucy Fannin, Michael Ayers, Zachariah Fannin, Abigail Fannin, Caleb Fannin, Cora Fannin, and Isaac Fannin; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Betty will be remembered for her unwavering faith, generous heart, quiet strength, and deep love for her family. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers of Community Hospice for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Betty during her final days.
A Memorial Service celebrating Betty's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Moloney-Hewell Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard South, Jacksonville, Florida. A reception will follow at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 6320 Bennett Road, Jacksonville.
