Listen to Obituary
Betty Anne (Flynn) Phillips, of Starke, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2015. She was a loving Mother and a good friend to so many. She touched lives with her spirited enthusiasm, and genuine caring for others.Betty Anne was born on January 20, 1932 in Starke, Florida. She was the youngest child and loving daughter of George B. Flynn, Sr., and Florence Emma Flynn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William C. Powell, Jr., and sister, Martha P. McClane. Amongst her immediate family, she is survived by her loving daughter, Cheryl Anne Phillips, and a brother, George B. Flynn, Jr., many cousins, nephews and nieces. Her family lovingly includes Angus T. McDowell, her most treasured companion. They enjoyed many visits and adventures, especially to Biloxi, and nights around the campfire with friends. Also specially remembered in her family are Laurie L. Owens, and the Carl and Kirk Hunsinger families. She loved all of her family.Betty Anne grew up attending Bradford County schools and proudly graduated with the Class of 49. Following graduation and a short time attending school in Jacksonville, she moved back to Starke and started her career at the old Bradford County Courthouse as a Secretary to then County Judge Yawn. When they moved to the new courthouse, she continued her career in the Clerk of the Circuit Courts Office and retired honorably as Chief Deputy Clerk, working with many County and Circuit Court Judges, Clerks of the Court, and making lifelong friends along the way. There was only a brief interruption in that career when she wanted to take time to stay home with her daughter.Betty Anne had several hobbies, most of which were on the path to helping or doing something for someone else. She loved to cook but most of all, she loved to share what she cooked, especially at holidays when the house was filled with smells of holiday sweets, which she and Cheryl enjoyed delivering around town. She also enjoyed cooking the holiday meals and always hoped to fill every seat at the table, especially if someone didnt have a family to share the holiday. She was an animal lover and always welcomed any dog or cat that may "follow" her daughter home. She loved her Florida Gators, any sport, and loved to fish, especially enjoying the dinner that the catch would provide. She also grew up with a talent for playing the piano. Playing gave her such joy, from a duet with a childhood friend, to the lessons she gave to many young people in this area or just playing alone. Late in life playing for her Sunday school class was very special. Last but not least, she had a green thumb not yet matched, enjoying filling her yard with plants and trees, both flowering or fruit and vegetable, this bounty was also proudly shared. In her later years, a special person entered her life, Michael Greenidge, a wonderful friend. He started taking care of her yard which enabled her to continue enjoying her gardens. He did all the heavy lifting and followed her strict instructions regarding all plant care. He also helped her in many other tasks and was there whenever she needed assistance.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 2, 2015 at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 163, West Jefferson Street in Starke with Mr. DuPont Murphey and Pastor Scott Crook officiating.
