Mrs. Burney Rowsey Winkler of Starke passed away at her home September 6,2021. She was born in Albany, Georgia, November 16, 1935, to William Edgarand Eugenia (Naff) Rowsey. Educated in Atlanta, Georgia, Burney graduatedfrom North Fulton High School in 1953, attended the University of Georgia, and graduated from the University of Florida with a B.A.E. cum laude, M.A.E., and an Ed.S. She also received a certificate from the University of the South (Sewanee) for completion of the Education for Ministry program. Burney was employed by the Bradford County School Board as a teacher and media specialist (librarian) and retired as the Director of Curriculum. She was a lifelong Episcopalian, attending St. Marks Episcopal Church in Starke. Active in her church, she served in many capacities, among them Church Librarian. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter Rebecca Eugenia, a granddaughter Megan Jackson, and son in-law Gene McCarn. Burney is survived by her husband of 63 years, George Austin Winkler. George and Burney were married on July 25, 1958, at Emanuel Episcopal Church in Welaka, Florida. She is also survived by her two daughters Melissa Winkler Stringer of Dahlonega, Georgia and Clare Winkler McCarn of Ludowici, Georgia; granddaughter Rileigh Stringer; grandsons Rhett Stringer and Colton Infinger;great grandsons Kayden Kareklas and Charlie Stringer; a sister Jetta Rowsey Simpson of Santa Fe, New Mexico. sister-in-law-Sue Winkler of Starke and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. A private Celebration for Burney will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Starke. Burial will be at Crosby Lake Cemetery at a later date. Burney and the family request any donations in lieu of flowers to be forwarded to the Build Fund for St. Marks. Arrangements are by JONES-GALLAGHER FUNERAL HOME OF STARKE 904-964-6200.
