Dr. Carlos Enrique Muniz passed away surrounded by friends and family on Friday, May 9, 2014. He was born in Havana, Cuba to Manuel and Maria Muiz on August 26, 1924. He graduated from the Havana Medical School with honors in 1948 with a specialty in internal medicine, and furthered his medical career after immigrating to the United States in 1961 with a residency in psychiatry. Dr. Muniz was highly regarded as an internist at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cuba, a professor at the University of Missouri medical school's college of psychiatry, a full professor of psychiatry at the University of Florida, and the chief of psychiatry at the VA hospital in Gainesville, FL."Papi," as he was known by all, loved sports, especially tennis and Gator football. During the Olympic Games he would spend countless hours listening to his AM radio for updates on the achievements of the Cuban athletes. Papi will be deeply missed by his family and friends who will carry on his legacy lifelong love of education.He is survived by Sara, his wife of 64 years, his four children, Sara, Carlos, Albert and Ana, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.There will be a visitation and service on Saturday, May 10th, 2014 at the Forest Meadows Memorial Park Centrals "Chapel in the Meadows" starting at 6:00pm
