Obituary

Caryl Lord Woosley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on January 19, 1933, Caryl lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to others, and a deep love of learning, music, and community.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Woosley, and her daughter, Beverly McLear. She is survived by her daughter Cynthia Beggs and her son David (Beth) McLear; grandchildren Jennifer Beggs, Christina (Logan) Bowman, Lindsay (Andrew) Griffeth, Hannah (Glynn) Segars, and Laura (Jarred) Oxford; and great-grandchildren Casyn Bowman, Korbin Bowman, Sawyer Griffeth, Sutton Griffeth, James Segars, Lawson Oxford, and Elizabeth James Oxford.

Caryl received her early education at the Agnes Irwin School and later attended Smith College before completing further studies at the University of North Florida. A gifted musician, she was an accomplished pianist and a dedicated choral director, sharing her love of music throughout her life. She faithfully served on the Session and as Social Coordinator at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, and in later years, she worshipped at First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Her professional career was both distinguished and varied. She worked in physics and mathematics for the U.S. Department of Defense before later becoming a Certified Public Accountant and trusted tax accountant. Caryl also enjoyed athletics throughout her life, excelling in field hockey, tennis, and golf. Her fondest memories included her summers at Camp Greystone, a cherished tradition that was later shared by her daughters and granddaughters.

Caryl persevered through many hardships with courage and grace, and she believed strongly in the power of positive thinking, a conviction that guided her life and inspired those around her.

A Memorial Service will be held at Presbyterian Village Athens in Athens, Georgia on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church of Athens Worship and Music Fund or to the Great Day Fund at Camp Greystone.

Caryl will be remembered for her intellect, her faith, her love of music, and her steadfast devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on in the generations she inspired and the many lives she touched with kindness and grace.
