Cheryl Moore Hewitt

November 4, 1950 — August 18, 2026

Cheryl Moore Hewitt passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026 at the age of 75.

Cheryl Hewitt was born Cheryl Anne Moore in Vicksburg, Mississippi on November 4, 1950 to Margaret (Peggy) Wade Moore and Cleon Stevens Moore. Cheryl spent most of her childhood in Merritt Island, Florida while her dad, a civil engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers, managed much of the construction at Cape Canaveral, later the Kennedy Space Center.

After graduation from Merritt Island High School in 1972, Cheryl studied nutrition and institutional foods at the University of Roll-Tide-18-National-Football-Championships Alabama, graduating with a B.S. in 1976, with the goal of becoming a registered clinical dietitian. While working in a two-year clinical internship at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, she met future husband Seth when his mother introduced them to each other at church. After a few years of dating, they were engaged on April 13, 1975, and were married on December 21, 1975. Together they lived in Columbia, SC, Richmond, VA, Denver, CO, Fairfax, VA, and then in Dallas, TX for the last 18 years.

As a lifelong learner, Cheryl added to her undergrad degree a one year certificate in Bible from Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions, a certificate in accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University, and in 1999, a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from George Washington University. After working only a few years as a clinical dietitian, Cheryl decided to make a career change. She had never liked her job as a dietitian—well, actually she hated it! —so she decided to do something entirely different. Why not a career in accounting? Numbers don’t talk back like grouchy old men do, and you don’t have to spend your life around sick people. After passing the CPA exam on her first try in 1980, she worked as a CPA in two public accounting firms. When she and Seth moved back to Virginia from Colorado, she began a 27-year career at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Her first almost 15 years there were spent on the audit staff of the Inspector General’s office. Following a year sabbatical to finish her master’s degree, Cheryl moved from audit to the criminal investigations staff as a criminal investigator. During that time she also served as the Chief of the Financial Investigations Branch of the Counter Intelligence Center for two years.

Cheryl was a woman of many loves. She loved her Lord, her husband, her Boston Terriers, Alabama football, her family and friends, and, although quite the introvert, she loved people, especially those “invisible people” whom most people overlook. She loved being in the kitchen and was an excellent cook and baker. Neighbors looked forward to the occasional, late afternoon surprise delivery of a hot Italian loaf, or a sourdough round, or her special cookies. She loved to work with kids and, while living in Virginia and being a part of Immanuel Bible Church, she taught elementary school aged children in Sunday school. She was best known for creating a character known as “the spy” to teach Bible stories to six to ten-year olds. Oh the stories she fashioned! Cheryl was an avid scrapbooker and an excellent self-taught seamstress. In retirement she took up quilting and enjoyed blessing many, many people with her cloth creations.

After her initial diagnosis with breast cancer in 2014, she and Seth bought a travel trailer and hit the road. They enjoyed great times together, and with their Boston Terriers, visited many state and national parks from Florida to Arizona to Montana. Her favorite two parks were the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.

Cheryl fought a difficult twelve-year battle with breast cancer without ever complaining. The medical staff knew her more as a friend—and chocolate chip cookie provider—than as a patient. Her quick, dry wit and snarky sense of humor were defining personality traits, even in difficult and painful times.

Cheryl is survived by Seth, her husband of fifty years; by her brother Rick Moore and his wife Linda; by her sister Sandra Moore Kite and her husband Terry; by niece Rebecca Moore Cameron, her husband David, and their children, great nephew Aidan, and great niece Abigail; and by nephew Adrian Moore, his wife Tami, and their children, great niece Madison, and great nephew, David. In addition to her brother-in-law, Bryan Hewitt, one aunt and uncle, and numerous cousins, Cheryl leaves behind many people whose lives she enriched, and who will miss her greatly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pleasant Mound Cemetery Association, Inc., (3151 S Buckner Blvd., Dallas, TX 75227 tel. (214) 388–4110), where Cheryl volunteered for the last eight years, or to Joy Meadows Foster Care Community (12400 170th Street, Linwood, KS 66052, (913) 347–2476, https://joymeadows.org) where Cheryl sent many quilts to the children they foster.

Cheryl is already greatly missed!
