Mr. Clayton Sonny Strickland, Jr.Mr. Clayton Sonny Strickland, Jr. age 77, of Lawtey passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009 in Gainesville. Mr. Strickland was born on September 11, 1932 at Kingsley Lake to the late Clayton G. Strickland, Sr. and Myra Lee Townsend Strickland and was a lifelong area resident. He retired from the Florida Department of Corrections after 30 years of service, including a tenure as Superintendent of Corrections at Florida State Prison and also attended Sampson City Church of God. He was preceded in death by his brother Andy Strickland and brother-in-law Jim Seiple. Survivors are: his wife of 48 years Rosine Strickland of Lawtey; children: Jill Fulgham (Robert) of Lawtey; Kathy Williams (Greg) of Tavares; Kendyl Strickland (Amy) of Marietta, GA; Kitty Ganz (Jay) of San Jose, CA; siblings: Jackie Seiple and Phyllis (Jack) Seiple both of Jacksonville; Townsend (Barbara) Strickland of Kingsley Lake; Woody Strickland of Orange Park; Sandra (Buddy) Norman of Starke; Lynda (Jim) Garlington of Jacksonville Beach; grandchildren: Katy, Justin, Tim, Michael, James, Macey, Summer and Clay. Sonny was a Bull Gator and enjoyed attending both football and basketball games, and supporting the Florida Gators. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and spending time with family and friends. The family will receive friends at the DEWITT C. JONES CHAPEL on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Sampson City Church of God with Reverend Gene Bass Officiating. Internment will follow in Kingsley Lake Cemetery.
