Mrs. Cody Benner Helms, 88, passed away February 16, 2012 at E.T. Hospice Care Center. Cody was born in Wilton, Maine, daughter of Helen & Raymond Welch, graduated from Wilton Academy 1942, Gates Business College 1944. She was employed by the FBI in Washington DC, before becoming historian and admitting officer at the Augusta General Hospital. In January 1945 she accepted a Civil Service position with the VA in DC and also worked in Togus and the VA at Portland. In the next couple years she was off to San Francisco CA to receive her final Civil Service orders to Guam. Sometime after she became a Stewardess for TWA, met and married her husband of 58 years Harlie B Helms Jr., a Naval Aviator. After many years of service CDR. Helms retired from the USN in 1975 bringing them from Potomac MD back to Gainesville FL, to settle in his home town. Cody worked for many charities and enjoyed her time serving others in the community; she was a member and faithfully served the First Baptist Church. Her greatest joy in life was her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.She is survived by her husband CDR. Harlie B. Helms Jr., daughter Suzanne Wansley Benner of Carthage, ME and son David W Helms of Gainesville, grandchildren Jennifer Wansley Edwards of Dunedin, FL, Rachel Wansley Garcia of Oldsmar, FL, Laura E. Wansley of Newberry, FL and 11 great grandchildren Julia, Olivia, Brooklynn, Trevor, Lisette, Jasmine, Jared, Adrian, Mackenzie, Randall & Priscilla.Memorial Service will be held on March 3, 2012 at 1PM, at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, 725 NW 23rd Ave., Gainesville, FL with Daniel Basak officiating.
