Curtis Mayfield

Mr. Curtis Mayfield age 89, of Keystone Heights passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 in Gainesville after an extended illness. Mr. Mayfield was born June 3, 1928 in Warrior, Alabama to the late William Andrew and Nola (Barrow) Mayfield. He has been a resident of Keystone Heights for the last 26 years and retired from Inland Steel Mill in East Chicago, Indiana after 30 years of service. Curtis was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a lifetime member of the Steelworkers Union. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years, and playing horseshoes in his later years. Curtis was the horseshoe champion at both work, and family reunions; he also loved to play dominoes. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gene Elkins. Curtis is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary A. Mayfield of Keystone Heights; children, Victor C. Mayfield (Barbara), Janet L. Mayfield Elkins, and Julian Andrew Mayfield, all of Keystone Heights; siblings, Bryan Mayfield of Richland, Georgia, Nola Vaughn (Bill) of Birmingham, Alabama, Roland Mayfield of Hayden, Alabama, Charles Mayfield (Pam) of Michigan, and Maureen Carnrick (Art) of Milton; and three grandchildren, Crystal Ann Elkins, Joshua Gene Elkins (Mindy), and James Paul Mayfield. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2017 at Jones-Gallagher Funeral Chapel with Jeff Abell officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Keystone Heights Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Curtis' name may be made to Haven Hospice.
