Dean Lloyd Speed, 90, died peacefully in his home June 20, 2019, in Keystone Heights, Florida where he lived with his wife, L. Carolyn (Sawyer) Speed for eleven years. Dean was born on April 1, 1929, in Mattawamkeag, Maine, the son of Lloyd Dean Speed, of Macwahoc and Velma Eva Leathers of Winn. He grew up on their family farm in Mattawamkeag and loved the life of taking care of the farm, raising animals, growing and preparing their own food, taping maple trees to make his own syrup.When he was a teenager the family moved to Old Orchard Beach. A couple years later the family moved back to Mattawamkeag and Dean stayed in OOB with John and Hazel Kennett as his "adopted" family. He worked for them in their hardware store until John passed away and he stayed with Hazel and her son John. John has been a treasured friend and "brother" since then. He graduated from Mattawamkeag High School with a class size of 6 students in 1947, then Northeastern School of Accounting. He went in to the US Army for 2 years rising to the rank of Corporal and during his time off he traveled to Rome, Germany, Paris and Switzerland. When he got out of the service he went back to OOB and met his future wife, Helen Wilma King. They shared 53 years together before she died in 2007. Dean built their home on Portland Avenue, starting in 1955 and a camp on Ironbound Pond in Solon, Maine in 1967. Many family and friends shared their joy of the camp through the years for weekends, vacations and weeklong hunting trips. He worked as a supervisor at SD Warren Paper Co in Westbrook, Maine for 33 years when he took early retirement. His retirement was always busy building, remodeling, gardening and traveling in their camper with the NCT Masonic camping group.He was a Master Mason for 67 years in Orchard Chapter #215 and held office for more than 50 years as Worthy Patron, Treasurer and District Deputy for the Grand Chapter. He also was a member and served in offices in the Order of the Eastern Star during that time.He was predeceased by his first wife Helen, his parents, his brother Ken, his sisters - Pauline Gillis and Joan Boynton. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Keystone Heights, Florida; his sister Mary Guzman and her husband Joe of New Braunfels, Texas; his brother John Kennett of Scarborough, Maine; five children - Janice (Speed) Knight of Troutman, North Carolina; John Speed and his wife Michelle of North Carolina; Lois (Speed) Guest and her husband Jim of Strongsville, Ohio; Lloyd Dean (Jack) Speed and his wife RaeLynn of Conyers, Georgia; and Janie Speed of Troutman, North Carolina. Two stepchildren - Doug Stevens and his wife Trish of Derry, New Hampshire and Lorinda Wisdom of Keystone Heights, Florida, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
