Dianne Almira Crouse

Dianne Almira Crouse left us unexpectedly and entirely too soon on August 20, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida, at 71 years of age due to a rare and unforeseen complication during a procedure to improve her quality of life. She was an incredibly unique woman with a wonderfully sharp wit and keen sense of humor and a laugh that made you feel included because it was sincere and free of judgment. 

Her absence will be felt in ways that cannot be captured by words. 

Born Dianne Almira Davis in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May 1955, she came to Florida in her early adulthood and built a life here. She is survived by her beloved daughter Abigail Lance and son-in-law, Andrew Sokolow, her sister, Ruthann, and brothers, Ken, Michael, Dave, and Tom.

 Her brother Ken remembers her as his fun, beautiful, funny sister. He holds onto small moments that remind him of how happy she made him, like the lovely fall day she suddenly began spinning in place while declaring "The trees are turning." She constantly made him laugh, and he loved making her laugh, too. He recalls fondly that she was kind to him at times when kindness was rare. And she remains a part of many of his best memories. 

Her sister Ruthann remembers her as a cherubic blonde child who danced whenever she heard music. She speaks to the many things she still wishes she could share with her sister about the distance between what was and what might have been. She believes Dianne knew she was loved, and now finds herself voicing these most difficult questions that simply have no answers: Why her?, Why now?, and Why in this way?

 Dianne was an avid reader with a deep love of words and language. Early in her career, she worked as an editor with ESE, where she formed lifelong friendships with coworkers who jokingly referred to themselves as "The Computer Dead." She later continued her work in the field as a medical transcription editor and medical language specialist. In her twenties, she also performed as a belly dancer, and at one point even danced for the music great Tom Petty. 

She was a skilled cook and loved animals deeply, even when it came to offering that same thoughtful attention and care to a raccoon named Tripp who came into her life unexpectedly one day and upended it in the happiest way. 

Though she will be fondly remembered for many of the amazing things she accomplished in life, Dianne always believed her most important role was that of being the mother to her daughter, Abigail, who remembers her as her best friend and her favorite person. Abigail always hoped to be as effortlessly cool as her mom, the kind of cool that comes without trying and without even knowing it's there. Dianne loved, accepted, and understood her daughter in a way no one else did. She taught her resourcefulness, resilience, and, more than anything, she taught her the point of life: To laugh, to love, and to seek joy even when it's difficult to find. 

Despite difficult times, Dianne remained authentic, kind, and selfless- she was a force of nature, and her absence marks a distinct and undeniable shift in the lives of those who knew her. She never hesitated to offer what she had to the people she loved, and her generosity, kindness, and unmistakable laugh will be deeply missed. 

As difficult as it is to encapsulate such an incredible person, her spirit and perspective can perhaps best be expressed with a quote by Carl Sagan: 

"The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. It seems to me much better as we look death in the eye, to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides."
