October 5, 1929 - June 25, 2024Fleming Island, Florida/ Hahira, GeorgiaDolores was born in Columbus, Georgia the fourth of nine children of Clarence Russell and Myrtle Tomblin Vining. She moved with her parents and family to Marshallville, Georgia at age 5 (1934). While living in Marshallville she took dance/ Tap lessons and thus began her lifelong love of dancing. In 1943 her parents and family returned to Columbus, Georgia and she graduated from Baker High School in 1946. She spent her first year of college in Duluth, Minnesota, continuing her undergraduate education at Prince Georges County Community College, Maryland and graduating with her college degree from Valdosta State College in 1988. She worked in various positions within the Education Field.Dolores met her husband, Tanner David Knox, while he was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga. They were married on October 16, 1949. She traveled the United States and Europe with her military husband, establishing a home with each transfer and raising their four (4) children. After her husbands military retirement, a second career with Southern Railroad took their family to Slidell, Louisiana and Valdosta, Georgia. In 1975, they established their retirement home in Hahira, Georgia. They had been married for sixty-four (64) years.Dolores was an active member of the Valdosta Garden Club, joining the Amaryllis Club and later the Camellia Club. She served as Past President of the Garden Center and is an Honorary Life Member. She was a Life Master Judge, and enjoyed all things that supported the Garden Center and the Crescent. There was always a fresh arrangement in her home. In addition to her love of gardening she was a member of the Valdosta Literary Guild, Hahira UMC choir, Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and several Bridge groups. When there was community interest she would teach Bridge lessons.She is survived by two (2) of her four children, Michele Knox, and Pam Burckel. She lost her husband in 2014, her only son, Tanner David, Jr. in 2020, daughter Cynthia Anne Knox Cochran, in 1982 and son in law Joseph Burckel, in 2022. Dolores enjoyed her seven (7) grandchildren, Tammy Shannon (Will), Dominic Iannucci, Suzanne Knox (Mali), Nicole Terpstra, MacArthur Knox (Kristina), Barbara Burckel and Cynthia Dawson (Ryan). There are seven (7) great grandchildren and two (2) great, great grandchildren. She saw, held, and loved five (5) generations of blessings! Dolores has three (3) living siblings, Sara V. Shirk, Donald (Bobbie Jean) Vining, Daniel (Beth) Vining and sister-in-law Barbara Vining. They have all remained close over the years. There are numerous nieces and nephews from both the Knox and Vining sides. Mother valued family and enjoyed all their visits too.A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM on Saturday July 20th at the Hahira Community Church (formerly Hahira United Methodist Church), 208 North Church Street, Hahira, Georgia 31632. The burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, the date and time to be determined.
