Donald Arthur Sohm (88) passed away on July 3, 2026 in his home in Green Cove Springs, Florida, surrounded by his family.
He lived his entire life in Green Cove Springs, well-known, loved, and respected by everyone with whom he interacted. Don was born September 25, 1937 to Art and Vivian (Hall) Sohm. The oldest of five siblings, he was in Clay High School’s iconic class of 1955 and was a well-known fixture in academics, music, and athletics. He studied Education at the University of Florida, achieving a Master’s degree in Physical Education. Back in Green Cove Springs, he taught and was an assistant principal at Clay High School and coached their basketball team on to one year’s State Championship. From there he continued as assistant principal at S. Bryan Jennings Elementary and principal at Orange Park Elementary from where he finally retired in 1992.
In 1960, he married the then new-found and final love of his life Marlyce with whom he had two children, Allegra Maria and Charles Nathan who in turn have yielded seven grandchildren and one great grandson. His wife, children, daughter-in-law, and oldest three grandchildren were with him when he passed peacefully in his home.
Don enjoyed life robustly. He was an avid church-goer, tennis player, fisherman, gardener, photographer, singer, and fry-cook. He found deep pride in creating space at his home for many scores of his closest friends. He was deeply involved in the worship and work of his church, and remained a reliable pillar of that community for decades. He had a mind like a steel trap, a relentless work ethic, and sacrificial generosity that was a blessing to all who knew him.
Don is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim Sohm and Henry Sohm. He is survived by his wife Marlyce, his daughter and son-in-law Maria and Paul Elliott, his son and daughter-in-law Charlie and Charlotte Sohm, his brother and sister-in-law Howard and Gloria Sohm, his sister-in-law Celia Sohm, his sister and brother-in-law Jean and Joseph Sobotta, his grandchildren Kirsten Barringer-Cook, Jonathan “Rusty” Barringer, Josiah, Corban, Malachi, Asher, and Esther Sohm, and his great grandson Roddy Barringer-Cook.
His memorial service will be held at his home church, the Green Cove Springs Church of Christ, on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 6pm with a viewing at 5pm and a reception following.
