Obituary

Dorothy Grace Matter Yarbrough, 73, went home to be with the Lord on April 29, 2025 after a courageous 9-year battle with cancer. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.Dottie was born on April 17, 1952, in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Attorney Carroll E. Matter and Grace V. Moyers Matter. She was raised in rural Ohio and graduated from Western Reserve High School in Berlin Center, Ohio. In 1973 she enlisted in the Unites States Navy and served on active duty and in the reserves until 1978. Her military career brought her to Jacksonville, Florida where she remained until 2017 when she moved to Starke, Florida.After the Navy, Dottie earned her bachelors degree in Allied Health from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She became a Master Cosmetologist and quickly realized that cosmetology was her passion. It afforded her the opportunity to witness, grow extended family, fulfill her artistic bent, and make people happy. She shared her knowledge and skills by being an educator in the corporate sector as well as for the Duval County Public School system until her retirement in 2016.Dottie was actively involved in each of her home churches, the most recent being Grace Methodist Church in Lawtey.Dottie had many interests. Over her lifetime she was involved in ballroom dancing and competition, became a Master Gardener, a member of several garden clubs and genealogical research. Dottie loved and was loved by people and could easily strike up a conversation with almost anyone.Dottie was preceded in her new journey by her parents, Carroll E. Matter (1910-1973), Grace V. Matter (1917-1982) and her brother Carroll Allen Matter (1956-2017). She is survived by her husband Timothy Lamar Yarbrough.There will be a celebration of life for Dottie at Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home in Starke, Florida on Monday May 19, 2025 at 10:00 followed by an internment at the Jacksonville National Cemetery the same day at 2:30 where she will be laid to rest with her brother and sister veterans.
