Edward Lawrence
Hughes Age 73 Of Keystone Heights
Dec 23, 1951 — Jul 25, 2025
Edward Lawrence Hughes
December 23, 1951 – July 25, 2025
Edward Lawrence Hughes, 73, of Keystone Heights, Florida, formerly of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on July 25th, with his beloved wife Wendy (Nelson) Hughes by his side.
Born on December 23, 1951, in Providence, Rhode Island, Ed was the son of Edward and Helen Hughes. He grew up in Rhode Island alongside his sisters Debbie Ewing (Bobby) and Colleen Kraft (Kurt), and carried a deep love for his home state no matter how far his adventures took him.
Ed's life was deeply tied to the ocean. A lifelong fisherman, he built a remarkable career in both commercial and charter fishing, casting lines from Narragansett Bay to the distant waters of the Pacific. He was a pioneer in the world of fly fishing for big game and was featured in several magazines and television programs for his skill and fearless approach to the craft. Whether hauling gear or sharing stories at the dock, Ed brought a rare mix of grit, knowledge, and generosity to everything he did.
Nature wasn't just his work, it was his calling. In his later years, Ed turned to photography, capturing the quiet beauty of landscapes and wildlife with the same patience and reverence he brought to the sea. Around that time, he also served as the North Kingstown Harbormaster, continuing his lifelong bond with the ocean and its people. Whether he was studying the waters of the Bay or gazing across the horizon over Midway Island, his deep connection to the natural world never wavered.
Though he traveled the globe, Ed remained a true Rhode Islander at heart. He could make anyone laugh with a quick joke or an old fishing tale, keep you updated on the striper migration, or simply be there when you needed someone to talk to. He often said, "It's all good," and that's exactly what he was, all good.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy (Nelson) Hughes; his sons Matthew (Marissa), Michael (Jessica), and John Carozza (Amy Cimino); and his grandchildren Shea, Violet, Malia, and Mackenzie. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters Debbie Ewing (Bobby) and Colleen Kraft (Kurt), extended family, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Helen Hughes.
