Mr. Edward W. Kain, LT COLONEL, USMC (RET), 85, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Born November 27, 1930 and raised in Yonkers, NY. Mr. Kain attended St. Marys Elementary and Roosevelt and Commerce High Schools. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps during his junior year on December 1, 1947. He served 6+ years enlisted service in the Disbursing Branch in ranks PFC through Technical Sergeant in base support Camp Pendleton, CA and Camp Lejeune and Norfolk, VA. Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 1953, he served primarily as Armor Officer in First, Second, and Third Tank Battalions, special projects officer USMC Test Unit One (Armor and Antitank tactics) from 1957 to 1960. His other assignments were serving as Assistant Recruiting Officer, Albany, NY; Armor Officers Career Class, Fort Knox, KY; and as Military Personnel Budget Officer at Headquarters, USMC. His overseas service included duty in Japan (South Camp Fuji) in First Tank Battalion as Platoon Leader and transferred to Korea (Third Marine Division) Third Tank Battalion, then rotated to USA with the Third Division and served as Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer. The next 14 months was spent as Tank Project Officer in Marine Corps Test Union that was developing tactics for airborne amphibious landing. In 1963, he had a second tour in Iwakuni, Japan (13 months) as Base Assistant Logistic officer. On September 30, 1969, he retired with an Honorable Discharge as LT Colonel after serving 22 years, with awards including the following: Korean and Vietnam Area Service Medal and at retirement, The Distinguished Service Medal. In November 1969, he accepted a position as Business Manager for the Washington Center for Metropolitan Center in Washington, DC, where he was promoted to position of Treasurer in that organization. In 1972, he accepted the position of director of Finance and Administration with the American Geological Institute until March 1984. From 1957 through 1972, he attended night classes at various colleges and universities, and graduated with a degree in Administration from George Washington University in 1972. Other specialized training included a degree from the College of Financial Planning as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and licensed in real estate, life insurance, stocks, and mutual funds. On August 1, 1953, he married the former Carolyn "Wynell Tipper" (who preceded him in death in 2015) at the Base Chapel, Naval Base, Norfolk, Virginia. Together they had 4 children, Nancy Carol Kain, James William Kain, Ann Jean Lusk, and Susan Carol Kinney-Perkins. He was also blessed with 6 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. In 1984, Mr. Kain retired and relocated with his wife to Orange Park, FL. They finally made their move to Penney Farms Retirement Community in 2008. The family will hold services at Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors at a later date.
