Obituary

Elva Hudson Hinnant, 87, passed away Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, in Green Cove Springs, Florida. She was born on December 13th, 1938 to Caradine and Mary Susan Hudson in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Elva was the cherished wife of Robert (Bob) Grey Hinnant for 67 years, with whom she shared a lifetime of joy and companionship.

Elva began her career in the 1950's with the F.B.I. under J. Edgar Hoover. Bob often shared the story of how he met Elva while working with the F.B.I. He remembers stepping into a room filled with people one morning. He glanced across the room to see Elva. In that moment, he said he saw his future, and he knew that one day he would marry her.

In 1958, together, Elva and Bob moved to Tallahassee, Florida. Elva eventually served as an F.D.L.E. Supervisor for the Fingerprint Identification Section. Elva helped pioneer the implementation of one of the first Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems(AFIS) in the country. She dedicated herself to making a difference in public service and law enforcement.

Elva was a proud member of the Tallahassee Garden Club and St. John's Episcopal Church for many years. She was devoted to helping others through a multitude of community service projects.

One of Elva's favorite places was spending time at their mountain home just outside Blairsville, Georgia, near Nottely Dam. Elva loved hiking and sharing picnics with family in Meek's Park, Neel's Gap, and Vogel State Park.

Elva is survived by two children: Robert Grey Hinnant, Jr. of Crawfordville, Florida and Mary Susan Tebo of Green Cove Springs, Florida; her grandchildren: Robert Frank Hinnant of Milton, Florida, Mary Sylvia Hinnant of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jenna Musgrove of San Antonio, Florida.

Funeral arrangements are with Helm-Gallagher Funeral Home of Green Cove Springs, Florida. Family and friends are invited to share in a Celebration of Life and a reception (date to be determined) at St. John's Episcopal Church, 211 N. Monroe Street, Tallahassee, Florida.
