Florence Harris OwenOrange City-Florence Vance Harris Owen, 100, died Sunday, March 14, 2010 at John Knox Village in Orange City, FL. Mrs. Owen was born on May 9, 1909 in Crandall, FL to the late Charles and Martha McIntosh Vance. Losing her mother shortly after birth, she was raised by her sister, the late Mary Hodgins. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School, Bar Harbor, ME, and from the University of Florida. Mrs. Owen lived in Keystone Heights, and retired from Keystone Heights Elementary School after many happy years as a school teacher. Mrs. Owen was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Melrose, the Arthur Erwin Chapter of WSDAR of Deland, FL, and the Joseph E. Finnegan Chapter UDC in Keystone Heights. She was a charter, and lifetime, member of the Garden Club of the Lakes in Keystone Heights. She was preceded in death by husbands, Leonard E. Harris and Gordon N. Owen. She is survived by: step-daughter Mary Jean (Deaver) Thomas of Atlanta, GA; step-son Norman (Sandra) Owen of Berkeley, CA; nieces Mary Paquet and Esther Testa of Bar Harbor, ME; and June (Don) Castator of Lubbock, TX; nephew Charles (Nelda) Vance of Jacksonville; step-grandchildren Susan Owen of San Francisco, CA; Katharine Owen of Eureka, CA; Deaver Thomas of Washington, DC and Owen Thomas of Alpharetta, GA; and adopted grandchildren Lynn (Tommy) Miller, Beth (Mark) Krahl and Guy (Marie) Dyal, Jr. all of Starke; as well as many great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews and great, great, great nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Owen will be held Thursday, March 18 at 2pm in the Jones-Gallagher Chapel in Keystone Heights. Interment will follow at Keystone Heights Cemetery. Remembrances can be made to the Garden Club of the Lakes, Inc. FFGC at P.O. Box 595, Keystone Heights, FL 32656.
