Gary Alan Brooks, 70, finished his earthly race and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 5, 2026. A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Florida, Gary was born on July 24, 1956, to the late Aulton and Vivian Brooks. Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend, whose life was marked by steadfast faith, unwavering integrity, and a servant's heart. Those who knew him knew a man of conviction, wisdom, kindness, and quiet faithfulness. He loved the Lord deeply and sought to honor Him in every area of his life.
A graduate of Terry Parker High School's class of 1974, Gary later attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1981. In 1989, he earned his master's degree from the Simon Greenleaf School of Law (Trinity International University) in Anaheim, California. Gary was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville for many years, where he served in numerous capacities, including as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He faithfully opened God's Word, encouraged believers, and pointed others toward Christ through both his words and the example of his life. He served 18 years on the local FamilyLife volunteer team, advocating for godly marriages.
Gary was also a dedicated runner. Those who loved him take comfort in knowing that the man who spent so many years running has now finished the race set before him. Having remained faithful to the end, he now walks the streets of gold in the presence of the Savior he loved so dearly. Above all, Gary loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 43 years, Mary Key Brooks; his children, Daniel Brooks (Abby), Eric Brooks, and Mary Katherine Brooks (Josh Buchanan, fiancé); his cherished grandson, Peter Brooks; unborn grandson John Brooks, who is expected soon and whose arrival Gary eagerly anticipated; his brothers, Ron Brooks and Tim Brooks; his uncle, Bruce Merritt (Betty); his brother-in-law, David Key; his nephew, Josh Key; his niece, Meredith Key; and many beloved cousins, extended family members, and treasured friends.
Though his family grieves his absence, they rejoice in the assurance that Gary is exactly where he longed to be. The race is complete, the prize has been won, and he has finally heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at First Baptist Church, 125 West Ashley Street, Jacksonville, Florida. A celebration of Gary's life will follow at 11:00 a.m. The family encourages others to honor Gary's memory by faithfully serving the Lord, loving their families well, and continuing to run the race set before them with endurance and faith. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
