George Bunyan Cathey Jr., age 89 passed away after a short illness on Feb. 22 2022 in Jacksonville. He was born Feb. 21 1933 in Fort Pierce, FL to George, Sr. and Lotta (Herrick) Cathey. George attended school in Fort Pierce until he moved to Key West at age 11. Upon HS graduation, he entered the Navy and served on the carrier USS Princeton during the Korean War. He attended the University of Florida on the GI Bill and received a degree in building construction. After graduation and some construction jobs in Key West, he moved to Jacksonville as supervisor on the construction of some of the buildings at Mayport. When the job was over and after some years at Moore Drywall in Jax, he opened George Cathey General Contractor and did repairs and remodeling for residents in Jacksonville. He retired in 2012.George married Virginia Smith in 1961. They had 2 children Stuart Alan and Jane Ellen. They divorced. George Married Barbara Powell in 1971 and became a much loved part of a family that included Bob and Laura Powell (now Rowley). George was predeceased by his mother and father a brother, Brooks and sister, Lotta and daughter, Jane. He is survived by his wife, son and step kids, 5 grandchildren and 1 great as well as nieces and nephews.George was musical and played the trumpet as a youth as well as in the Gator marching band. He sang tenor for years at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church and enjoyed Jazz performances at the Mudville Grill. His other love was the Gators sports teams. Go Gators! All who knew George loved him. He was a sweet dear man. He will be missed.A memorial service will be held at the South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church at 2:00 on Saturday March 5th.
