George L. Shuford

Mr. George Shuford age 91, of Lawtey passed away at his home Wednesday, August 19, 2015 following an extended illness. Mr. Shuford was born on June 25, 1924 in Saxe, Virginia to the late John Sidney and Mary Laura (Ramseur) Shuford and moved to Lawtey at the age of 3. He was a member of Madison Street Baptist Church, served on the Board of Trustees for Bradford Hospital for 28 years including time as chairman, and was elected to the Lawtey City Council where he served as Mayor during his 16 year tenure. He enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. George was an avid hunter, was a founding member of Camp 229 Hunting Club, and an honorary member of Piney Bay Hunting Club. He worked for Torode Electric for 10 years then began a career with the Florida Department of Corrections where he retired after 31 years as Motor Pool Supervisor. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son: John L Shuford, brothers: Joe Shuford, Sidney Shuford, Jr., David L. Shuford, and Philip Shuford. Survivors are: his wife of 63 years Valaria (Denmark) Shuford of Lawtey, daughter: Gayle Shuford Nicula (Perry) of Lawtey, grandchildren: Laura Nicula Griffis (Dusty) and John Michael Nicula (Kaitlyn), great grandchildren: Alley Griffis and Colby Griffis.The family will receive friends at MADISON STREET BAPTIST CHURCH on FRIDAY, August 21, 2015 from 5-6 PM with funeral services beginning at 6:00. Pastor Justin Kirksey, and Brother Charles Warren will officiate. Interment will be on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Kingsley Lake Cemetery.
