Thomas Thornton

George "Tom" Thomas Thornton was born June 9, 1946 and passed away on his 80th birthday, June 9, 2026.

He was a 1965 Bishop Kenny graduate and active an alumni. In 1971 he graduated from Jacksonville University with a degree in economics. For over 37 years he worked for the Florida Times-Union as a Company Services Manager and was respected in his profession.

He dearly loved his family and he also coached San Souci ball, was a voracious reader, and was a real wit with a joke always ready to share. He liked country music and southern Gospel. As a teenager he was a Sea Scout. All who knew him appreciated his warm spirit.

He was lifelong man of faith and in 2001 accepted Christ as his Savior at University Boulevard Church of the Nazarene. In 2010 he became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Predeceasing Tom were his father, J.W. Thornton and his mother, Marie (Capo) Thornton. Surviving are Mary Thornton, his wife of 38 years; Bryan Thornton, his son; and step-sons Dean Battenberg (Melony) who retired as Sergeant 1st class from the Army and Fred Battenberg (Margo) who retired as a CWO 3 from the Army. Surviving grandchildren are Jordan, Gunner, Alex, Ben, Kai, Luke, Andrew, and Noah Battenberg. There is a surviving step-grandchild Josh Cadiente and two step-great grandchildren.

Officiants for the funeral will be Rev. Jake White, Pastor of Southpoint Baptist Church and Noah Battenberg will give the sermon with John Hill in charge of interment. A reception will follow the funeral and is open to all.

Visitation will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Monday, June 22, 2026 in the chapel of Moloney-Hewell Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. S., Jacksonville, FL 32216. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Southpoint Baptist Church, 3335 Tiger Hole Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32216. The interment will follow at 3:00pm at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207.

Donations in Tom's memory may be made to the Duval County Alzeheimer's Association and/or VITAS Hospice.
