Mr. George Vurnakes is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Jeanette Vurnakes. He was born January 15th, 1925 in Spartanburg SC. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17. A World War II veteran he served in the Pacific on the USS Wren. At an early age he professed his faith in Jesus Christ at North Jacksonville Baptist Church of Jacksonville Florida. George was a lifetime member of the church and served on the parking lot committee for many years.He was united in holy matrimony to Jeanette Jarvis on October 27th of 1943. This union was blessed with two children. Terry and Jan Vurnakes. Mr. Vurnakes was born in the depression area, served 4 years in the Navy during World War II and continued to serve 30 more years with the US Postal Service and ultimately retired as a Post Master at the Melrose, Florida branch. Even after his retirement he continued to work 10 more years part time at the Duval County Courthouse as a Bailiff. His life was celebrated with his many family and friends as he enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, working with his hands, and most importantly good food. He spent his retirement years with his beloved wife and family. He peacefully departed this life Tuesday afternoon January 16, 2018 the day after his 93rd birthday at Community Hospice in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son- in- law and many grand and great children. His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his daughter and her husband, Al Bender and their two children, Christopher and Julie and her husband Josh Douglas. Mr Vurnakes was preceded in death by his son Terry Vurnakes who had two sons, Alex and Jeff Vurnakes and their wives Joni and Darlene Vurnakes. They have six children combined Matthew, Jacob, Dalton, Colby, Adriane, and Brodie. The graveside service will be on Friday (TODAY) the 19th at Evergreen Cemetery at 2PM. With Pastor Perry Fruscella officiating. Please in lieu of flowers the family would like everyone to make a donation to Community Hospice or to the Alzheimer's Research Association.
