Obituary

Herbert Joseph Poindexter, Jr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 14, 1917. After attending Andrew Jackson High School, he joined the United States Navy and was eventually stationed aboard the USS Oklahoma.On the morning of Sunday December 7, 1941 the battleship USS Oklahoma was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when it was attacked by Japanese forces. Four hundred and twenty-nine sailors and Marines from the USS Oklahoma were lost, including S1c Herbert J. Poindexter, Jr., U.S. Navy.In the days, months, and years following the attack, remains of men lost aboard the USS Oklahoma were recovered. Ultimately, 35 were identified; the unidentified remains were buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (NMCP). Over the last few years, steps have been taken to identify more of the men lost on that day. Now, over 200 have been identified... including Herbert Joseph Poindexter, Jr., a native son of Jacksonville, Florida.Among the commendations Mr. Poindexter received for his service and ultimate sacrifice for our country are the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and Navy Expeditionary Medal.In the intervening years Mr. Poindexter's mother & 2 sisters have all passed away. He is survived today by a nephew, Joe Allen & his wife, Susan of Tucson, Arizona and by a niece, Lisa Williams & her husband, Jeffrey of Fernandina Beach, FL.Funeral services will be private at the request of the family..Graveside Service
