Dr. Huey B. Long, Sr. of Melrose passed away Friday, August 12, 2022, athis home. Dr. Long, a fourth generation Floridian was born April 9, 1935, inGrand Ridge, Florida. He attended public schools in Alabama, Georgia, andNorth Carolina. He graduated from Baker High, Columbus, Georgia in 1953.His collegiate education included undergraduate study at Auburn University,The Florida State University, and The University of Georgia. His graduateeducation was obtained at Florida State University, The University ofOklahoma, and The University of Texas. He completed Post-Doctoral studyat The University of Southern California. He was awarded the B. Sc. Degreein Social Science and Secondary Education by the Florida State University,1957; He was awarded the M. Sc. Degree in Geography by The FloridaState University, 1958. He received the PhD Degree in Higher Educationfrom The Florida State University, 1966. He was Armand Hammer Fellow inThe Andrus Gerontology Institute at The University of Southern Californiawhere he was also associated with UCLA in geriatric studies, 1985 to 1986.His career included six years with The Florida Forest Service and two yearswith the City of Tallahassee, Florida. Dr. Long devoted 37 years to highereducation as a professor and administrator at Florida Southern College asinstructor of Geography, The Florida State University, Director of The UrbanResearch Center and assistant professor, The University of Georgia,Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Educationand Professor, and The University of Oklahoma, Director of The ResearchCenter for Continuing and Professional Higher Education and Professor.Dr. Long was involved internationally in higher education activities. Heserved as visiting professor/researcher at Universities in Canada, England, Germany, and Sweden. He alsoserved in similar roles at The Pennsylvania State University and TheUniversity of Syracuse. Consultancies included The University of Florida,The University of Georgia, Institute of Higher Education, The MedicalCollege of The University of Oklahoma, Dept. of Otorhinology, TheOklahoma State University, Brevard Community College, Commissioner ofHigher Education of New York State, USAID, U.S. Senate, The U.S. Dept.of Education, The Oklahoma State Dept. of Vocational Education, theAmerican Association of Community Colleges, several Florida and Georgiacities, The American City Managers Association, The Ford Foundation, TheKellogg Foundation, The Sears Foundation, and AARP.Dr. Long published more than 700 books, and journal articles. Most of hispublications were based on research concerning adult learners: history,psychological issues, institutional provision and research studies andmethods. He was author Adult Learning which received the C.O. HouleAward for International Literature in Higher Education (1983). He foundedthe International Self-Directed Learning Symposium in 1986. It became theInternational Self-Directed Learning Society.He was the recipient of numerous awards by academic and professionalorganizations. He was in the founding class of The International Adult andContinuing Education Hall of Fame. He was recognized for OutstandingAchievement in Higher Education by the College of Education, The FloridaState University. Other forms of recognition and awards were accorded himby The National University Continuing Education Association, The AdultEducation Association of The USA, The Community Development Society ofAmerica, and the International Self-Directed Learning Society.Dr. Long is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Marie (Ward) Long ofMelrose. Three children, Huey Billy Long, Jr., Melrose; PamelaAnne Long of Melrose, and Mark Stafford Long of Watkinsville, Georgia,Granddaughter, Anna-Marie Long of Athens, Georgia; one great-grandchildren Ramona Lee Sutphen; several nieces and nephews.Proceeding him in death is his parents, Melvin Durward Long, Sr. andRamona Bernice (Robinson) Long and brother, Dr. Melvin D.
