Obituary

Indira K. Hazariwala, 64, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2023 after bravely fighting peritoneal carcinomatosis (linked to ovarian cancer) for two years. She is married to the love of her life, Dr. Kaushik Hazariwala, and together they were able to celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary on October 30th.She was born in Lira, Uganda, to Nagindas and Parvatiben Gandhi, on June 3, 1959, and was the youngest of eight siblings. She completed her education as a microbiologist in India and moved to Canada, where she worked multiple jobs to support their new life together.Indira and Kaushik couldn't wait to start a family together and had two daughters, Ronica and Vikisha. Indira was a devoted mother and her greatest joy in life was raising her children, and sharing her love of education, music, dance, and travel with them.Indira was passionate about participating and contributing to the community and organized several children's cultural programs for the Indian Cultural and Education Center (ICEC). She also served as the treasurer for ICEC for many years. She volunteered at her children's schools and the Gainesville Rotary Club. She was also famous for her incredible meals and loved hosting friends and family at her home and spoiling them with a gourmet, home-cooked spread.Indira's favorite role, however, was being a Nani (grandmother) to her grandchildren, Zubin and Selina. She treasured her time with them and completely delighted in their company. She never failed to celebrate each holiday with them, big or small. She loved watching them dance the Macarena and sing religious songs during Navratri and Diwali.Over the course of nearly 30 years in Gainesville, Indira built a beautiful community of friends, with whom she celebrated weddings, baby showers, and everything in between. She is especially grateful to them for the love and support they showed her and her family during her illness. She also is the beloved youngest sister of her siblings and the aunt to many nieces and nephews, and she felt blessed to have their unwavering love and support through each and every part of her journey.Indira will be remembered for her beautiful, deeply dimpled smile, her incredible strength in the face of adversity, and for her selflessness. She always went above and beyond to serve others in their time of need. We were beyond blessed to have her as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, sister, and aunt, and her passing leaves a giant hole in our hearts and lives. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who have loved her.Indira is survived by her husband, Dr. Kaushik Hazariwala, and daughters Dr. Ronica Nanda and Dr. Vikisha Hazariwala, her son-in-law Dr. Arjun Nanda, her grandchildren Zubin and Selina Nanda, and her siblings Manjuben Ghayal, Kailash Gandhi, Lata Hazari, Aruna Gandhi, and Raju Gandhi, and their families.
