Obituary

Inger Louise McRae August 21, 1950 - May 25, 2026

Inger Louise McRae, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, returned to her Heavenly Father on May 25, 2026, following complications from a years-long battle with cancer.

Born August 21, 1950, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Elis and Brita Petterson, Inger was the third of four children. She developed a deep love of music early in life and carried it with her always-singing in choirs, playing the piano, and mastering several instruments, including the accordion. Though she later made her home in the United States, Inger remained deeply proud of her Swedish heritage and shared its traditions, stories, and culture with her children and grandchildren.

Inger met David Burton while he was serving as a missionary in Sweden. They married and later traveled to the United States to begin their life together. They welcomed two sons, Jamie and Rick, as well as an infant son, David Elis Burton, who preceded her in death. After their divorce, she later met Robert McRae, who had three sons, and together they added their daughter, Sherra, completing a blended family she cherished.

A dedicated member of the Gainesville community, Inger owned and operated U.S. Title & Escrow for 35 years. She valued the friendships she built within the Realtor and mortgage community and was known for her integrity, warmth, and professionalism. Service was central to her life; she regularly volunteered at fundraising events, community benefits, and prepared and served meals at St. Francis House-often bringing her children and grandchildren along to teach them the joy of helping others.

One of Inger's proudest accomplishments was becoming a United States citizen. She studied diligently for her citizenship exam, joyfully involving her grandchildren in the process and turning it into a family celebration of learning and heritage.

Inger had a profound love for the Savior and was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings throughout her life and was always quick to offer support, compassion, and Christlike service to those in need.

Inger is survived by her sister, Ann-Britt Rydgren of Stockholm, Sweden; her children James (Crystal) Burton of Gainesville, Rick (Lisa) Burton of Lake Worth, and Sherra (Michael) Gurman of High Springs; her stepson Dane (Jenny) McRae of St. Louis; eleven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McRae; her infant son, David Elis Burton; her brother, Per Olov Petterson; her sister, Lena Stenborg; and her parents, Elis and Brita Petterson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10600 SW 24th Ave, Gainesville FL 32607, with interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lake Butler, Florida.
