Jack Louis Russell, Sr. "Rusty", 91, was called to his heavenly home on Monday, September 19, 2022.Born in New York City on November 6, 1930, he resided in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, graduating from Andrew Jackson High School in 1949, and serving briefly in the U.S. Army.Rusty is survived by two children; his daughter, Tanya Russell Crescimbeni (John) and his son, Jack L. "Russ" Russell, Jr. (Ramona); four grandsons, Kyle Selvig (Melissa), Brad Selvig (Olivia), Ryan Russell (Brittney) and Devin Russell; one granddaughter, Macy Saunders (Ash); five great grandsons, Tyler Selvig, Grayson Selvig, Landon Selvig, Beau Saunders, Julian Selvig; four great granddaughters, Colbi Russell, Sutton Saunders, Grayley Russell, Palmer Selvig; one brother, James "Duke" Russell (Robbie); two sisters, Mary Frances "Cookie" Earle and Carmen Barnhart and countless cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends that he loved dearly.Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. and Frances Hugas Russell, a son, Clay Russell, brother and sister-in-law, Robert "Bobby" and Dora Russell and nephew, Todd Russell.Rusty was an avid FSU fan who attended football games for decades, driving a motor home to Tallahassee for all home games, filled with friends and family. He was an accomplished offshore fisherman and always owned his own boat, including "Sea Girl" that he chartered for fishing tours. He thoroughly enjoyed his stint as a Charter Captain until the day the Sea Girl began taking on water and sank. He had six guests on board that day and Rusty always told the story that none could swim. Thankfully, the Coast Guard arrived in time and rescued everyone before Sea Girl went under.Always up for a challenge, he became a pilot in the 1960s and bought his own airplane. He took the exam for his General Contractors license while in his 50s and started building houses. During his life, his occupations were varied. He was a car salesman for Gordon Thompson Chevrolet, a charter boat Captain, worked for Innkeepers of America (Holiday Inn), started his own hotel supply business, bought and operated a restaurant, owned a used car lot, built homes, renovated condos and supervised construction crews. He never really retired. He was a member of Elks Lodge #829 and was quite the well-rounded individual who never met a stranger! The family would like to thank the entire staff of Wyndham Lakes Senior Living Community, Dr. Ray Silbar and staff (Jacksonville), the staff of the Winn Dixie store on AIA South, the manager at Anastasia Self Storage, Dr. George and his entire cardiology team, Island Doctors and the staff of the former Center State/South State Bank A1A (all in St. Augustine) for always looking after Rusty. We hope he brought as much joy into your lives as you did his.A visitation with the family will be held from 68 PM on Monday, October 10, 2022, at George H. Hewell & Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. South, Jacksonville. A Catholic Rite of Committal will be held graveside at San Lorenzo Cemetery, 1635 U.S. 1 South, St. Augustine, on October 26, 2022, at 11:00 AM.And, as Rusty would always say: "I hope the Man upstairs is smiling down on ya, and the fish are bitin where you are.".There are no gallery images.
