It is with sadness that we announce the passing of James Louis Wilkerson Sr., age 97, who passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at his home in Lawtey. Born on April 9, 1929, in Bradford County, to the late Andrew James and Edith (Padgett) Wilkerson, James lived a life marked by dedication to his family and a deep commitment to his country. A proud veteran of the United States Army, James enlisted on January 11, 1951, and served honorably until his discharge on October 10, 1953, achieving the rank of Sergeant. For his valor and service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, a testament to his bravery and commitment during his military career. James was a lifelong resident of Lawtey where he cherished the simple joys of life. He grew up attending Highland Baptist Church and retired from Merita Bakery in Jacksonville. He enjoyed the peaceful pursuits of gardening and fishing. Above all, James deeply loved spending time with his grandchildren, creating cherished memories that will endure in their hearts forever. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Carolyn (Taylor) Wilkerson and grandchildren, Andrew Wilkerson and 2 Kilby baby boys.
He is survived by his children, James Wilkerson Jr. of Lawtey, Kathy (Richard) Gains of Starke, Gertrude "Ginny" (Jason) Mallicoat of Starke, Sharon Goodwin of Hampton, and Carl (Stephanie) Wilkerson of Lawtey, sister, Hope Carroll of Lake Helen. Also left are his 8 grandchildren, Jay Wilkerson of Raiford, Shay and Chris Forsyth of Starke, Jammie and Donnie Freeman of Tampa, James and Barbara Kilby of Starke, Jessica and David Green of Hampton, Jason and Stacy Kilby of Starke, Randy Kilby of Starke and Grady and Savanna Wilkerson of Starke along with 23 great grandchildren. Funeral services to honor James's remarkable life will be held on September 2, 2026. A visitation for family and friends will take place at DeWitt C. Jones Chapel at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Long Branch Cemetery at 2:00 PM, where James will be laid to rest with military honors. In this time of loss, the family invites all who knew James to join them in celebrating his life and legacy, paying tribute to a man who exemplified strength, kindness, and devotion to his family and country.
