James L. Womack, 72, Green Cove Springs, Florida, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, October 12, at Jacksonville Baptist Memorial Hospital after a valiant struggle with cancer. Jim is survived and will be greatly missed by Evie, his loving wife of 39 years, stepsons Bill and Brad Hamilton, daughters-in-law Shelly and Valerie, and grandchildren Justin, Alexandra, Ansley and Fisher, all who truly adored Papa Jim. Other family members include his brother P.D. Womack and wife, Peggy, aunts Jean Hardison and June Turner, along with his native Tennessee cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His extended family includes Evelyns aunt, Lillian Stump, brothers and sister, Fred and Ruth Ann Thomson, Marjorie and Phil Jacobs and Henry and Cydney Thomson as well as their children and grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mildred Womack and his grandparents Clarence and Hettie Hardison of Columbia, Tennessee. Jim is a native of Columbia, Tennessee. A Vietnam veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966, following which, he enrolled in Tennessee Technological University where he completed a degree in electrical engineering. Jim then accepted a position at DuPont Chemical in Starke, Florida. In 1980, Jim and Evelyn bought Stumps Department Store which they managed together for eight years, freeing Evelyn to also pursue their commitment to community service. His long, successful career continued as he transitioned to construction engineering work for the University of Florida, Duval County Public Schools, Johnson Controls, Inc. and Trane Commercial, US. Jims greatest accomplishment is the way he lived his life. He was a friend to all and served his fellow man as a member of Rotary International and the Elks and as Ruling Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Jim is remembered for his ready smile, his love of a good round of golf, his great sense of adventure and passion for travel, his devotion to his wife Evie, their family and friends, and his appreciation of a full-bodied red wine. A celebration of Jims life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Green Cove Springs, Florida, at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2016. Family visitation and a reception in the Fellowship Hall will follow the service. Burial and graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Cemetery in Waukeenah, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Jims memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Green Cove Springs designated for the air conditioning fund.
