Obituary

Jane McLorinan Shannon Miss Jane McLorinan Shannon, 91, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012 in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service to be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Church of the Assumption, 2403 Atlantic Blvd., with Fr. Fred Parke as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Jane was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on August 2, 1921 to Hubert Matthew Shannon & Lena Durden Shannon and spent most of her young life in Southport, North Carolina. During World War II Jane joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and served in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) where she spent time in Frankfurt, Germany, and Versailles, France. Because of her rare combination of beauty and modesty, Jane was selected to model and be photographed wearing priceless jewels which had been recovered from the estate of Hermann Goering. These photographs were later featured in Liberty Magazine. Jane's military service in France was the beginning of a lifelong love for the French language and the city of Paris, where she made 11 trips throughout her life with her sister-in-law Willie Shannon and her nieces. Jane moved to Jacksonville in 1960 from Wilmington, N.C., with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (now CSX), where she worked in the law department until her retirement. She has been a member of Church of the Assumption parish since that time. Jane's was a gentle and generous soul and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Jane is survived by two of her six brothers, John Hubert Shannon & Alfred E. Shannon; many nieces & nephews, including Laura Shannon Smiley (Jeffrey), Susan Shannon Klemmt (Lyle), D.
