Funeral services for John Joyce "Matt" Mathis, 102, widower of Eunice Lucille Mathis, will be held at 10:00A.M. Tuesday, September 5, 2017 in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South with Chaplain Bob Bole officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors at the graveside. Born November 25, 1914 in Perry, Florida to Clara and Henry Mathis, Mr. Mathis died Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Jacksonville. He was a member of Spring Glen United Methodist Church. Mr. Mathis served in the United States Navy during World War II; was retired foreman of Woodcraft Shop, N.A.S., Jacksonville; was a member of the Fleet Reserve; and retired from the Naval Reserve as a Chief Petty Officer. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Alda (Richard) Tarvin; 3 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
