John Schmidt

Dr. John George Schmidt age 82, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville. John was born on December 31, 1934 in Chicago, IL to the late Adolph Emil and Louise (Zabinska) Schmidt and was a longtime resident of Starke.He graduated from the University of Illinois, received his Master of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Florida. Dr. Schmidt was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Starke and a former Boy Scout Cubmaster and Scoutmaster. He was also a member of the University of Floridas Dance for Life and Sing for Life as well as Delta Sigma Phi. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by siblings: Otilia Arp, Rosalie Cronin, Paul Schmidt, Louise Gamble and Hugo Schmidt, Survivors are: his wife of 58 years, Verna Grace (Davis) Schmidt of Starke, children: Todd Schmidt (the late Sandy), Cana Rensberger (Edward), Dirk Schmidt (Lynn) all of Starke, Shaun Schmidt (Tammy) of Topeka, KS, grandchildren: Samantha Flanders (Chris), Rowdy Rensberger, Rachel Rensberger, Merideth Schmidt, Jonathan Schmidt, Amber Schmidt, Thomas Schmidt and his great granddaughter Chloe Flanders. Also left behind are his siblings, Adolph Schmidt of Norridge, IL and Margaret Botes of Mercer, WI.The family will receive friends at the DEWITT C. JONES CHAPEL on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a time of sharing from 7:00 to 7:30.
