Obit: John B. VarneyMr. John B. Varney, 85 of Keystone Heights died at Windsor Manor Nursing Home on Thursday, July 23, 2009. John was born on December 6, 1923 to the late John C. and Ruth (Berry) Varney of Barnstead, NH. John attended Barnstead School and graduated from Pittsfield High School. He went on to Keene State Teachers College before joining the US Army during WWII where he served in the European theater. After the war, John attended meat cutting school in Toledo, OH on the GI Bill. Much of his work life he cut meat, first at the Locker Plant in Pittsfield and then for Varneys Market on Main Street. He later co-owned the Chichester General Store with his parent and worked a number of years for the post office in Pittsfield as well. Civic activities included long time service with the Pittsfield Rotary Club, especially as liaison with the Boy Scout troops, various church positions at the Pittsfield Congregational Church and the First Congregational Church in North Barnstead, and as a member of the cemetery board in Barnstead. John loved his family times at the camp he had built on Loon Pond in Gilmanton, NH and the Rotary Hot Air Balloon rallies. On June 30, 1946 in Cornish, NH John had married Hattie Elizabeth Harrington. She predeceased him in 1992. On September 6, 1993, John married Leha Watts in Gilmanton. They split their time between NH and Florida, moving to Keystone Heights full time in 2007 where they became members of the Keystone United Methodist Church. He John is survived by his wife of 16 years, Leha: two children, Norma Varney McGonis of Lebanon, NH and Richard Alan Varney of Lancaster, OH. 2 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services for John will be held at 11 oclock on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in the Keystone United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Corbit officiating. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Barnstead, NH. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Keystone United Methodist Church Playground Fund. P. O.
