CHAMPAGNE
Master Sergeant Joseph Ernest Champagne, U.S. Air Force, Retired, passed away on June 11, 2026, at the age of 80.
Joseph was born on March 31, 1946, in Cohoes, New York. He was educated at St. Michael's and Keveny Memorial Academy.
He is survived by his daughter Tamatha (Champagne) Cain (James), and sons Daniel Ernest Champagne (Dorothy), Neil Joseph Champagne, David Bijoy Champagne (Jody), 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, sister Barbara Mitchell, brother David Champagne, and many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years Zarina Champagne, parents Ernest and Sophia Champagne, sisters Nancy Brandenberger and Marybeth Vredenberg, and grandson James Cain, III.
Joseph proudly served in the United States Air Force for more than 21 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. During his distinguished career he served as a Morse Intercept Operator, Administration Technician, and Security Specialist, including more than 10 years of overseas service. He served during the Vietnam War, and his deployments included Peshawar, Pakistan; Tehran, Iran; and Okinawa, Japan. His military honors included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and numerous service and campaign awards.
An avid golfer, he also excelled at darts, billiards, basketball, and softball. He would often be caught tapping out Morse Code on the arm of his recliner. A devout Christian, he was a long-time supporter of charities including St. Jude. He loved his wife and children deeply, and tirelessly supported them in all their endeavors. He leaves behind a large, loving family forever grateful for his legacy of service and generous devotion.
A Memorial Service with military honors will be held July 10, 2:00 PM, at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32218, with Celebration of Life to follow.
