Obituary

Joseph Harry Fink was born in New York City to Paul and Florence Fink on September 20, 1942. He resided in City Island, NY, until 1957 when he, his father and stepmother, Hazel, relocated to Florida. After graduating high school, Joe joined the North Miami Beach Fire Department in 1963. When his department merged to become part of the Metro-Dade system in the Miami area, Joe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Joe married Kay Lehr in 1966 and raised two children, Ann Austin (Jay) and Joseph Fink, Jr. In 1984, Joe married Kathryn Schlaug. Joe retired early on disability in 1987 and he and Kathy relocated to North Central Florida. They eventually settled outside of High Springs, Florida, where Joe was active in running the Spring Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and volunteering with the Knights of Columbus. After more than 30 happy years, Joe's beloved wife passed away in 2018. Joe is survived by his two children and four stepchildren: Lynn Miller (Brent), Maurice Schlaug II, Beverly Bunn (Tim) and Jeffrey Schlaug (Johnon). Joe has two grandchildren: Aimee Lynn Austin and James Austin Jr., two step-grandchildren, Dane Miller and Dhira Romero (Gabriel), as well as four step-great grandchildren: Lali Sanchez, and Amani, Anika and Krishna Romero. A memorial Mass will be held in Florida at St. Madeleine's Catholic Church in High Springs at a later date. Joe's final resting place will be alongside Kathy at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Axtel, Kentucky. Joe's devotion to his country and community as well as his wide circle of friends will not soon be forgotten.
