Joseph Autry Greer, ll "Joe" of Gainesville, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025. He was the son of the late Lloyd Barton and Julie Winn Varnedoe Greer of Valdosta, Georgia. He is survived by his brother, Major General Lee Varnedoe Greer (Rosemary) of San Antonio, Texas; his son, David Roby Greer of Mebane, North Carolina; his daughter, Allison Kay Greer White and grandsons, Peyton and Ethan White of Saint Augustine, Florida; his son, Andrew Stanford Greer (Megan) and granddaughters, Mackenzie, Adeline, and Linden Greer of Gainesville, Florida; and grandsons, Steven Ryan Greer (Kaylan) and Skylar Steven Greer (Larissa); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his son, Steven McInnis Greer; his sisters, Mary Winn Greer Rightmyer (Charles), Pardee Greer Ewing (John) and Julie Varnedoe Greer; and his brothers, Lloyd Barton Greer, Jr. (Phyllis) and Dr. Mack Varnedoe Greer (Betty).
Joe was born July 3, 1933, in Valdosta, Georgia. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College in 1955, a Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1959, and a Master of Theology degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1996. He served pastorates in Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama. He served as the recording clerk in The Presbytery of Southeast Alabama and Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of North Florida. Joe was also the Presbyterian Campus Pastor at Georgia Tech and the University of Southern Mississippi. Most recently Joe served as Assistant Pastor and active member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Florida. Joe enjoyed his involvement in the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at the University of Florida. Joe is well-known for his deep devotion to Jesus and his zeal to make him known, encouraging many young men in their call to full-time ministry. Those who know Joe best will find the humor in his decision to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ during the Duke - Carolina football game on November 22. Both Duke and Joe ended the evening victorious!
Services for Joseph Autry Greer, II will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2025. The family will receive visitors at Faith Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Florida (5916 NW 39th Ave, 32606) beginning at 9:30 a.m. Service will take place at 10:30 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta, Georgia (1100 North Oak Street, 31601) at 2:00 p.m.
