In Loving Memory of Kathleen Mitchell
July 9, 1947 - November 5, 2026
With heavy hearts and a lifetime of love and memories, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Kathleen Mitchell, on November 5, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on July 9, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, Kathleen was a woman whose strength, determination, and fierce love for her family defined her life. She was strong-willed and feisty, never afraid to speak her mind, but beneath that spirited personality was a heart that loved deeply and unconditionally. She always wanted the best for everyone she met and had a way of making people feel cared for, welcomed, and loved.
Kathleen's strength was shaped by a childhood that was far from easy. After losing her mother at just seven years old, she took on the responsibility of helping raise her two younger sisters, Eloise and Emily, whom she loved dearly. She learned early in life what it meant to be strong, to sacrifice, and to put others before herself. Those experiences helped shape the mother she would become. She was determined to give her own children a better life, to make sure they felt safe, loved, happy, and healthy, and to do everything in her power to break the cycle of hardships she had experienced herself. She became the role model her children would look up to for the rest of their lives.
In the 1970s, Kathleen made the move from Chicago to Florida, determined to create a brighter future for her children. With the comfort and support of family in Boca Raton, she began building a new life, eventually settling in Broward County. In 2023, the family made another move, this time to Gainesville, Florida.
Along the way, Kathleen found a love that would forever hold a special place in her heart. She and her beloved husband, Kenneth, shared 15 years of marriage before his passing. Though their time together was far too short, Kenneth was the true love of her life. The family they created together remained one of her greatest treasures, and their love will always be part of her story.
Her greatest pride and joy was her family. She leaves behind her four children: three sons and one daughter, Joe (wife Penny), Rich, Dennis (wife Jennifer), and Kelly (husband Khris); and five cherished grandchildren, Destiny, Kelsie, Tyler, Lorelei, and Kayleigh, who were the light of her life. She also leaves behind her beloved sisters, Eloise and Emily, along with countless friends of her children who found in Kathleen something special: a second mother. Her love was never limited to those connected by blood. If you were part of her children's lives, there was a good chance she claimed you as family, too.
Twenty-one years ago, Kathleen welcomed her son-in-law, Khris, into her family and gave him something far greater than acceptance-a special place in her heart that made him feel like one of her own. Khris found in Kathleen a bond that went far beyond family titles. She helped him see the wonderful father, husband, and son he was, stood beside him and Kelly as they raised their children, and offered her love, wisdom, and guidance along the way. Their connection was unbreakable. To Khris, she was never just a mother-in-law; she was Mom, and he will forever carry her love with him.
Kathleen shared that same open heart with her daughter-in-law, Penny. What began as a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship grew into a special mother-daughter bond built on love, acceptance, and the feeling of truly belonging. She welcomed those who married into her family with open arms and loved them as her own.
For 21 years, Kathy welcomed Jenifer into her family and over time their relationship grew into something special.
Through 16 years of marriage to her son, Dennis, they started a family of their own and welcome their daughter, Lorelei, and Kathy loved as her granddaughter.
We will always cherish the years, memories of trips, and family bond they shared. Kathy will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
Kathleen knew how to enjoy the little things in life. She loved the holidays, especially the joy of bringing family together and spoiling her grandchildren every chance she got. She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, cheering them on with a loyalty that never wavered. Her love and support extended beyond the home and into the stands and sidelines, where she proudly cheered on her children and grandchildren in their sporting activities. She was always one of their biggest fans, showing up, encouraging them, and celebrating their accomplishments every step of the way. She also loved to travel whenever life gave her the opportunity, making memories along the way, and enjoyed a good game of bingo whenever she could. And if she wasn't spending time with family, cheering on her favorite teams, or playing bingo, chances were she was settled in watching her favorite crime television shows.
Kathleen's presence was larger than life, her love was immeasurable, and her influence will live on in every life she touched. She taught her children the importance of strength, compassion, and putting love into action. She gave them the kind of love that doesn't disappear when someone is gone; it becomes part of who you are.
While our hearts are broken by her absence, we find comfort in knowing that the lessons she taught, the memories she created, and the love she gave will remain with us forever.
She was our mother, our protector, our role model, and our home. She was the person who showed us that family is not just something you are born into, but something you build with love. There will never be another quite like her.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Always our mom.
