Lake Ray Jr. peacefully passed away surrounded by his family January 10, 2020 at the age of 90. He was born in Jacksonville, where he was raised and lived a full life with family and friends. He grew up in Southside on Pottsburg Creek with his parents Lake Ray Sr. and Marjorie (Pat) C. Ray (later Hogan) during the Great Depression. His father was a building contractor who taught him many skills which eventually led him to become a civil engineer. He graduated from Landon high school in 1946 where he made lifelong friends. Mr. Ray went to the University of Florida where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. Following graduation, he met Sandra Rambo who would become his sweetheart and bride until she passed away after forty-six years of marriage. He worked for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad until 1960 when he started Harbor Engineering Company. Over the next 45 years his company provided various engineering services for almost every commercial and industrial facility on the St. Johns River and many projects across the Southeast and Caribbean He maintained his professional engineering license until 2013 and continue to consult with many former clients until he retired.His treasure was his family having four children, all of which survive him: Debbie Hagan (Gene), Lake Ray III (Brenda), Linda Boyd (John) and Lori Yarborough (Dennis). He was also the proud grandfather of nine children, all of whom survive him: Merrill, Andrew, Lake IV, Forrest, Hampton, Sarah, Krissy, Lauren and Paige. He was also a great-grandfather of seven (and two on the way): Anson, Autumn, Amelia, Reagan, Asher, Corbin and Alice.Mr. Ray was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church where he was active in various boards of the church and their bowling league. Mr. Ray was active in his community leading homeowner associations, Southside Businessmans Club, the Executive Association, Landon High School Alumni Club and others. He was a Past Master of Duval Lodge 159.He had a passion for travel taking him across the country and the world, many times with his entire family. In addition to travel, he had a deep interest in history which he passed along to his descendants.The family will receive family, friends and visitors at the George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, S. on Sunday January 12, 2020 from 4 to 6 PM. The funeral services will be held January 13 at 10:00 AM at the Arlington United Methodist Church. Graveside services will immediately follow at Greenlawn Cemetery on Beach Boulevard.
