Mr. Larry Grant BattlesMr. Larry Grant Battles age 69, of Lawtey passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at E.T. York Hospice Care in Gainesville. Mr. Battles was born on June 4, 1944 in Chipley, Georgia and moved to Lawtey from Jacksonville in 1977. He served in the United States Air Force, worked as an operating engineer in the construction industry, and worked for the state of Florida Prison system. Larry was a Baptist and a member of the Woodstock Masonic Lodge in Jacksonville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and most of all telling jokes. He was preceded in death by his mother Agnes (Grant) Battles and his grandson Conner Varnes. Survivors are: his wife of 37 years Virginia (Booth) Battles of Lawtey; son: Paul Smith (Robin) of Lawtey; brother: Holton Battles (Linda) of Jacksonville; grandchildren: Roxanne Griffis; Kymberly Smith; and Paul Stephen Smith, II all of Starke; great grandchildren: Brandon Frost and Jayden Voit both of Starke; nephew: William Battles of Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606. Memorial services will be private at a later date.
