Obituary

Larry James Thomas came into this world like he left it, too soon. He was born on November 1, 1976, in Gainesville, Florida. He arrived early and was sick. He needed intensive medical care for the first week and half of his life. The doctors were not certain Larry would make it. Ultimately, he did. Unfortunately, the struggle with his health continued throughout his childhood and adult life. Larry lived with life-long disabilities. He was in and out of the hospital for various reasons. He was never able to live independently. Fortunately, Larry's mother, Susie, did not have to walk this journey alone. She married John Brown when Larry was 18 months old and he became Larry's father. John and Susiecared for Larry in the home until he was 19. Larry also attended Sidney Lanier Center throughout his childhood and teen years. While Larry never learned to speak, he could express himself. Anyone around him knew when Larry was happy. He would hum or sing, as his family called it, and spin in circles.Observers would get dizzy watching him, but there was no doubt that he was joyful in that moment. He was happy much of the time. When he wasn't, it was usually because he needed something but didn't have the words to ask. Larry's family is grateful to his caretakers over the years who worked tirelessly to understand and meet Larry's needs. Due to his disabilities, Larry required 24-hour care and supervision. As a result, he lived most of his adult life in group homes. Larry's family is thankful for Mrs. Wood and all of her staff who cared for him. They did their best to ensure Larry had a high quality of life. He enjoyed going on outings with his housemates and family. Mickey Mouse also brought Larry joy.Towards the end of his life, Larry's health began to fail. He spent many years on dialysis. He also lost his ability to walk. His caretakers and family knew this was hard on Larry. He liked to be in motion and see his new things. His declining health and mobility made it difficult for him to get out anymore. Mrs. Wood and her staff worked hard to keep Larry comfortable in the home he knew, with the caretakers who knew him. Larry died peacefully in his sleep early in the morning on July 5, 2023, in Gainesville, Florida.Larry is survived by his parents (Susie and John Brown of Gainesville, FL), his sister (Leacey Brown of Rapid City, SD), his aunts (Debbie Colding of Gainesville, FL and Patricia Osborne of Gainesville, Fl), his uncle (Ricky Cruce of Zolfo Springs, FL). Larry was predeceased by his grandparents (CJ and Leacey Cruce), and uncles (Ed Green and Mike Cruce).A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 11:00 a.m..
