Obituary

Linda Cheryl Highsmith, age 67, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on July 2, 2023. Linda had a bright, positive personality that showed her faith in God and her knowledge of her home in heaven.Linda is survived by her father, John Lewis Highsmith, her mother Barbara Highsmith Nee Atwell of Jacksonville. Older brother Gary and wife Laura of Shreveport, LA and younger brother Darryl of Jacksonville. Her niece Selina Gawriluk and husband Kris and their son Kannon of Austin.Linda attended Clay County High School and went on to pursue higher education and graduated from St. Johns River State College 1976 AA, Jacksonville University 1978 BME, and the University of North Florida 1980 MEd. She had a successful career as an Exceptional Education Teacher for various elementary schools in Duval County, where she dedicated 38 years of her life.She was very active at Hogan Baptist Church for years, teaching youth Sunday school, directing children's choir, and being an adult choir member and soloist.She loved the kids she taught both at Duval schools and at her church.Linda loved her Savior Jesus, music, theater, dining out, and cruising. Despite being confined to a wheelchair as a result of an accident when she was 9, she embraced life to the fullest. Linda snorkeled various places in the Caribbean, skied on a sit-ski and dog sledded in Colorado, white water rafted, landed on a glacier in a helicopter in Alaska, and even rode in a hot air balloon in Georgia, in addition to various experiences during her 30+ cruises.A viewing will be held at Hewell & Son Funeral Home on University South from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14th. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15th, at Hogan Baptist Church, located at 8045 Hogan Road.In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Linda's name to Christ's Starfish Foundation, as there will be no graveside service.Please join us in celebrating the remarkable life of Linda Cheryl Highsmith and honoring her memory.
