Louisa Mayo Palmore Pickard, 85, of Penney Farms, Florida, died July 7, 2010 at Penney Retirement Community at Penney Farms.She was born November 14, 1924, in Kobe, Japan, the daughter of Rev. Peyton Lee Palmore, II and Florence Eugenia McAlpine Palmore. She was the second of 5 siblings: Jeannie Palmore Nelson of Palo Alto, California; Peyton Lee Palmore, III of Arlington, Virginia; Erdman Ballagh Palmore of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Mary Helen Palmore of Willard, Utah (deceased).After receiving a Bachelors Degree in Music from Westminster Choir College of Princeton, New Jersey, and a Masters Degree in Sacred Music from Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, Tennessee, Louisa was married June 12, 1948 to Raleigh Henry Pickard of Montgomery, Alabama. Together they served in India as Medical/Musical missionaries for 32 years. In India she was involved in the founding of an elementary school of which she also served as occasional principal. Besides her mission duties during that time, Louisa gave vocal concerts in the major cities of India, using her beautiful, trained, soprano voice. Upon retirement, Louisa and Raleigh made their home at Penney Retirement Community, where they were very active as volunteers in various aspects of life in the community. They founded the Sunday afternoon worship services at the Hagen Care Center.Louisa is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanna and David Shade, of Toledo, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Brant Hays of Colonial Beach, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Keene and Kim Pickard of Midlothian, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Bonni-Belle Pickard of Surbiton, England; son, Raleigh H. Pickard, Jr. of Alachua, Florida. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lauren Hester, Amanda Hardie, Richard Henry, Andrew Shade, Nathan Hays, Bethany Hays Bojorquez, Raleigh Pickard, Benjamin Pickard, Laura Pickard, John Pickard, Thomas Pickard. She also has five great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Henry Pickard, and her sister, Mary Helen Palmore. A memorial service will be held at Penney Retirement Community in August. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hagen Care Center at Penney Retirement Community, Penney Farms, Florida.
