Maebell Whitehead Hughes

Mrs. Maebell Whitehead Hughes age 81..yes 81!, passed away at Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center on Monday, March 28, 2016. She was born in Ashford, Alabama to the late Eldridge and Effie (Hicks) Whitehead. Mrs. Hughes was a retired waitress and a longtime resident of Keystone Heights. She was a member of Ochwilla Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, flowers, plants and being a "Nanny". She was preceded in death by two sisters, Estell and Vernell and one brother, Virgil. Her survivors are her husband of 29 years, Harold "Bud" Hughes; five children, Danny D. Boston (Theressa) of Hawthorne, Dennis Boston (Sandy Logan) of Pickens, South Carolina, Cindy Matheson (Ed) of Palm Bay, Cherie Vergason (Mark) of New Smyrna Beach, and Eddy Hughes (Tanya) of Hawthorne; one sister, Lounell Dunkin of Chipley; three brothers, Horace Whitehead (Evelyn) of Hilliard, Lewis Whitehead (Carolyn) of Keystone Heights, Odis Whitehead (Mary) of Bonifay. She was also "Granny Maebell" to twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren with one on the way and extended family, Paula Harvath of Jacksonville and Greg Neimeyer of Washington DC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 31, 2016 between 6 - 8 p.m. A celebration of life for Mrs. Hughes will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 1, 2016 in the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Johnny Goodwin and Maebells brother, Mr. Odis Whitehead officiating. The interment will follow at Keystone Heights Cemetery.
