Margaret Mary Smith died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday July 31, 2023 at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.Margaret was born at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. on March 19, 1927 the daughter of Harry Brunt and May McAuliffe.She spent much of her early years at St. Vincent's Orphanage after her mother died. She moved back home when her father remarried. She worked as a secretary at the State Department during WWII, and later as a model at the Hecht Company Department store.She met her future husband Edward J. Smith when he drove for the metropolitan bus service after the war. She was a frequent passenger on his bus route in NW Washington. They were married on January 31, 1948 and lived on K street when Edward joined the Washington, D.C. police force. When Edward got promoted to Sergeant they moved to Kensington, Maryland in the suburbs of DC and raised six children. When Edward retired in 1968 they moved to Venice, Florida.Margaret spent the last 25 years in St. Augustine, Florida.She had a full life; from orphanage, to secretarial roles, to mother of six unruly kids, to drive-on beach toll taker at St. Augustine Beach. She was also an active member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church.She is survived by 5 of her children: James, Michael,Daniel, Patrick and Susan Smith. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, son Andrew, granddaughter Alexis, brother James, sister Norma, and sister Winifred.A memorial service honoring her long life will be held at Forest Meadows Funeral Home at 725 NW 23rd Avenue, Gainesville, Florida on Wednesday,August 9th at 10 am.
