Obituary

Marshall Lawrence Carlton went to meet Jesus and his Heavenly home on Wed, July 13th, 2022, while in residence at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida. A devoted family man, devout Christian, entrepreneur and business owner are only a few of the many beautiful qualities of Mr. Carlton. He was born in Wimauma, Fl to James and Ruby Carlton, the youngest of nine children. They divided their time between that location, with Marshall spending the majority of his childhood in Starke, FL. He enjoyed many years with his siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, consisting of one of the largest family groups in Bradford County. Marshall began his career in the trucking industry, then was encouraged by a family member to go into business with them as a barber. He received his barber certification in May of 1964, and his master stylist certification several years later from Jacksonville Community College in Jacksonville, Fl. In 1974, he opened Marshall and the Hairbenders, being the first salon to open in Butler Plaza. It was the premier salon in Gainesville and served many clients in the Gainesville community and beyond. He joined the Regis Hairstylist team in the early 1990s and was instrumental in mentoring and training future stylists. He followed his dear friend and business partner, Kim Cross, to Charisma for Hair in 2003 and spent 15 successful years there until his retirement in 2018. Marshall enjoyed hunting, was an avid fisherman and loved biking the Rails to Trails system in North Central Florida with his wife Sandy, and their adored dog, Chloe in the bicycle basket right along with them. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at every outing, birthday and holiday that was possible to attend. He was devoted to his Lord, a strong mentor at his church, serving in the choir, countless prayer groups, and the greet team. He stood behind his hairstylist chair for 54 years and ministered to many people, as a true "man of God". He is preceded in death by his parents Ruby Rowena Newsom and James Henry Carlton; sisters, Marjorie Mobley, Sadie Simmons, R. Nanette Hughes, and Mary J. Green; brothers, J. Monroe, William I. and Martin H. Carlton and his daughter, Grindl Pearl Walden. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Carlton, daughter Anita K. Cacciotti-Thal (Martin) of Gainesville, Fl son, Raymond (Doug)las Carlton of Pensacola, Fl; step-son Daniel A Liezert of Denver CO; four grandchildren Christopher S. Cacciotti (Lisa), Jason A. Tompkins; seven great-grandchildren, Ria Emma Cacciotti, Dawson Walden, Alexis Lentz, Zachary Walden, Legend Dhar, and twins Stoic and Cyrene Tompkins; and sister Carolyn Holmes, Starke, Fl. sister-in-law Patti Thomas (Richard) of High Springs, FL He loved and highly valued his niece, Joy Plant, nephews, Barry, Daniel & Matthew Carlton, often referring to them as his "second" set of kids.He often used to say "If you have Jesus, you have it all, because Jesus paid it all." That legacy will live on, as he will live on in our hearts, forever. The family will receive friends at the DeWitt C.
