Listen to Obituary

Martin Lawrence Mesh – known by most as Marty passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 13th, 2026. Marty was born in Dallas, Texas. He was a visionary leader, a passionate advocate for sustainable agriculture, and a beloved member of the Gainesville community for many decades. He devoted years to organic farming, environmental stewardship, and helping create a more socially just and healthy world. For decades, Marty was a driving force in the organic agriculture movement. As a co-founder and longtime Executive Director Florida Certified Organic Growers & Consumers, better known as Florida Organic Growers (FOG), he devoted his life’s work to promoting healthy soil, supporting family farmers, advancing social justice in agriculture, and making fresh, organic food accessible to all. His passion and advocacy reached far beyond Alachua County, extending to the halls of Washington, D.C., where he played a pivotal role in shaping national organic standards and certification practices.

Marty’s legacy extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. He was known for his warmth, generosity, quick wit, and unwavering determination. But above all, his greatest joy and most enduring legacy were his three children, David, Hannah, and Esmee, whom he loved beyond measure. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Bess Mesh. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn (Susie Westfall); his brother, Alan; his three children, David, Hannah, and Esmee; and his two grandchildren, Riley and Miles. He will be deeply missed by his family, dear friends, colleagues, and the countless farmers, advocates, and young people whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

His life’s work will continue to grow through the seeds he planted, the people he inspired, the children he raised, and the lasting difference he made in the world.
