Marvin Burnette Harper Marvin Burnette Harper passed away on September 25, after a brief illness. He was born October 5, 1918, in his grandmother's house in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the son of Chelius Marvin Harper and Marion Burnette Harper.Marvin graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. In 1941, he joined the United States Navy. Following training in Pensacola, he was commissioned Ensign U.S.N. He served two tours aboard the USS Saratoga in the Pacific theater as a member of Fighting Squadron12 during World War II. He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. He retired as a Commander USNR.On October 2, 1942, in Miami, Florida, he married his childhood sweetheart, Kathryn Paris Manning. They enjoyed 67 happy years together. His entire business career was spent in the life insurance business. In 1983, Marvin retired as General Agent of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville. He was President of the Navy League, the St. John's Dinner Club, Timuquana Country Club, and the Jacksonville chapter of CLU. He was a trustee of Bartram School, Bolles School, and was a member of the Florida Yacht Club, Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, and Ye Mystic Revelers.Marvin was preceded in death by his infant son, Harold Scott Harper and grandson, David Parks Sutton, Jr. and his sister, Frances Harper Murphy. Marvin is survived by his daughter, Susan Sutton (David) of Memphis, TN and his son Marvin Harper, Jr., of Coker Creek, TN; his brother Jerry Warren Harper (Jane), his grandchildren, Kathryn Sutton Painter (Max), Sarah Sutton Watkins (Trey), Caroline Sutton Cousins (Mason), Kathryn Gunnels (Charlie), Christine Elaine Harper, Claudia Cameron Harper, and Matthew David Harper; and eight beloved great-grandchildren.In honor of Marvin, contributions can be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida-McGraw Center, 4715 Worrall Way, Jacksonville, FL 32224.
